Illegal Structures Near Nerul Bridge Demolished in Goa

Panaji, Goa - April 17, 2025 - The Public Works Department (PWD) has undertaken a demolition drive to remove illegal and unauthorized structures situated on government land in the vicinity of the Nerul Bridge. The action, which commenced on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, follows a court order and prior eviction notices issued by the collector in December 2024.

Key Points:

  • Demolition of Illegal Structures: The PWD razed approximately 31 structures on Wednesday, with the remaining expected to be demolished on Thursday. These structures included shops and a fish market.
  •  Reason for Demolition: Authorities stated that these structures were causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians, obstructing traffic flow, and hindering planned road widening of the major district road (MDR) passing through Nerul.
  •  Prior Warnings Issued: Owners of the demolished structures were reportedly informed about the road widening plans around 18 months ago and were given a 15-day eviction notice in December 2024. A previous demolition attempt in January 2025 was postponed.
  •  Impact on Livelihoods: The demolition has affected the livelihoods of several individuals, particularly fisherwomen who used a shed near the bridge for selling fish, as Nerul reportedly lacks a dedicated fish market.
  •  Local Sentiments: While acknowledging the court order, the Nerul Sarpanch expressed regret over the demolitions.
  •  Wider Crackdown on Illegal Constructions: This action is likely part of a broader initiative to address the issue of illegal constructions across Goa, potentially influenced by recent directives from the High Court.
  • It is crucial to understand that the Nerul Bridge itself was not the target of demolition. The operation focused on removing unauthorized structures located on government land near the bridge to facilitate infrastructure development and improve public convenience.

Renewable Energy: Powering a Sustainable Future

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the demand for clean and sustainable sources of energy has never been greater. With climate change, rising global temperatures, and the depletion of fossil fuel reserves, renewable energy has emerged as a practical solution for meeting our growing power needs while safeguarding the planet. What is Renewable Energy? Renewable energy comes from natural resources that are constantly replenished, such as sunlight, wind, water, and biomass. Unlike fossil fuels, which release harmful greenhouse gases and take millions of years to form, renewable sources are eco-friendly, abundant, and sustainable for long-term use. Key Types of Renewable Energy 1. Solar Energy – Captured from the sun’s rays using photovoltaic (PV) panels or solar thermal systems, solar power is one of the fastest-growing sources of clean energy worldwide. 2. Wind Energy – Wind turbines harness kinetic energy from moving air to generate electricity. Large wind farms and even sm...
